St. Martinus University contributes to local community
The upperclass students of the St. Martinus University have taken the initiative to conduct physical examinations for the baseball players of the local Senior and Little Leagues. These players are all preparing for international tournaments and need to undergo a medical exam to prove that they are fit enough to participate.
The students conducted this examination free of charge for approximately 75 players by which they contributed to our local community. A great initiative by our soon-to-be graduating students Be first to comment this article | Add as favourites (0) | Views: 142 |

Mid-term exams are just around the corner and students are spending all their time studying and preparing for the upcoming week. Just before every exam period, the atmosphere in the hallways changes and students feel more stressed about the question whether they have enough knowledge to pass the exams. To cheer up the students a little, they got a surprise visit during their classes today and as can be seen in the pictures, this has been a huge success!

In May 2007, St. Martinus appointed Dr. Miguel Miyares M.D., Ph.D., as Dean of Basic Sciences at the Curacao campus. Dr. Miyares taught Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology at St. Martinus University since 2006. Before joining St. Martinus Dr. Miyares taught in Ethiopia St. Eustatius, Colombia and Cuba. With over 30 years of teaching, clinical and administrative know-how, Dr. Miyares is well-equipped to take on the task of preparing St. Martinus for rapid growth. The years ahead will see an increase in the number of students as well as faculty. The directive given to Dr. Miyares is to develop St. Martinus, but at the same time retain the tradition of personalized attention to students. Looking ahead, Dr. Miyares took on both Dr. Angel Justiz, M.D., Ph.D. and Dr. Isam Zaza, M.D. to join St. Martinus in the fall. He further plans to add three new faculty members in January 2008. "I am keeping a close eye on the student to faculty ratio. At St. Martinus we want this ratio to remain under 10 to ensure that our students are treated as individuals." An area of particular concern to Dr. Miyares is student services and student counseling. "Students must be able to discuss their academic and personal circumstances in order to receive the proper advice that suits their needs. " To strengthen the availability of support services for students, Dr. Miyares will be working closely with coordinators in various staff functions. In order to provide counseling support he introduced Dr. Moron to St. Martinus. Dr. Moron has been appointed Academic Counselor. She is available twice a week during office hours for both academic and personal consultations. In a bold move Dr. Miyares decided to further strengthen the curriculum of St. Martinus by giving both Genetics and Immunology their separate identities. "Experience has shown that the USMLE examinations are focusing on these areas so we must stay ahead of the curve." Later this year Dr. Miyares will be working with the faculty to review the pre-medical curriculum. Currently St. Martinus has a strong pre-med curriculum as far as preparing students for the M.D. program. The directive given to Dr. Miyares by the Executive Board is to review the curriculum to give students a more "well rounded" experience.
